The Italian Greyhound Club Championship Show 2021
- a little report from a VERY hot day!
The Italian Greyhound Club Annual General Meeting and Championship Show Celebrating the Club’s 120 Years.
It all took place this year, one year late, thanks to Covid-19, but we still celebrated as though it were last year, in a village called Yelvertoft, near the junction of the M1 and M6 Motorways, since our regular venue was not available on our re-scheduled date of 17th July 2021.
Committee members arrived around 8am to complete the set-up of rings etc. which Secretary, Gay and committee member, Rob, had commenced the previous evening. This entails a lot of physical work, and thanks must go to Simon, who assisted with erecting gazebos, as well as looking after the trophy table and the Raffle. Thanks, also to Richard, who very kindly took on responsibility for posting signage to the hall, as well as arrows directing all around a one way system around the hall and the rings, necessitated by Covid regulations from both the UK Government and our own Kennel Club Ltd.
Richard also provided us with socially distanced chairs, in the hall, for use during the Annual General Meeting.
Thanks also go to his wife Valerie, neither of whom are yet members of the Club, but, having applied for membership, surely their keenness to help will go a long way to their acceptance.
Unfortunately, as with tradition, sadly, the AGM was rather sparsely attended, with several members offering their apologies for non-attendance.
The meeting over, and several exhibitors having arrived during the AGM, to set up their various sun shades, quietly policed by Richard to ensure social distancing, the Championship Show got under way.
It was judged by Pomeranian enthusiast, Mrs Lynn Webster (Pomlyn). Mrs Sue Dunning was to have judged this show, but due to her lack of mobility, pulled out but agreed to judge just one class, a Special Champion Stakes class.
The sun was quite ferocious, but a gazebo had been erected above the judging table, and so exhibiting dogs did not suffer unduly, with the good fortune that several classes were relatively small in number.
As previously stated, quite stringent Covid restrictions were necessary, but, apart from just one or two comments about the frustration of having to comply, the greater majority of exhibitors were very obliging in their compliance, for which Covid Health Co-ordinator, Rob offers his thanks.
The results will be found elsewhere on this website, but we were not allowed, officially, to post the results, as is normally the case, but they could only be published online.
David Willcock (Newill) judged the Special Awards classes during the lunch break, between Lynn’s judging of dogs and bitches, followed by the Champion Stakes, ensued by Junior Handling, judged by Rob Dunning.
(It is a pity that only one Junior Handler was present, since it is this generation who, hopefully, represent the future of the Club.)
The catering, which out of necessity because of Covid, was restricted to pre-packed sandwiches, rolls scones and cakes, was supplied and served by Dorothy and Jill, who also provided perpetual tea and coffee for a one off donation to their Honesty Box. We do not have any figures as yet, but the Raffle and Catering usually produce some very welcome revenue to offset the costs of running such a show.
Once all the judging was completed, it was time to clear up and head off home, all of which was completed by our deadline of 6pm to ensure no extra hire costs from the Yelvertoft Village Hall Treasurer, who, it must be said, was extremely accommodating of The Italian Greyhound Club.
Hopefully everybody returned home safely and in reasonable time, since our show clashed with the Formula One Motor Racing weekend at Silverstone, not a million miles away!
Rob Dunning – committee member who retired on the day.
Italian Greyhound Club Championship Show – 17th July 2021
a report from the judge Lynn Webster:
It was an honour and pleasure to judge the above show and I congratulate the Officers and Committee for making such a fabulous job of setting the show up in these trying times of Covid. The weather was extremely hot, but exhibitors were very good sports and their dogs withstood the extreme heat. My overall opinion of the exhibits was the variance of type, size and some a little too slim, on the up side most were good movers and seemed to enjoy their day.
I felt there was more depth of quality in the bitches than the dogs and gave me a lot to ponder over, which with the climate of the day, decisions needed to be made briskly.
Of course, I didn’t check mouths because of the substance on my hands, so exhibitors were good to show me and overall looked correct.
